Preserving Beauty While Modernizing Spaces
For this recent project, we partnered with our clients to remodel the kitchen and ensuite in their estate-style bungalow backing onto Edmonton’s River Valley.
While both the kitchen and ensuite needed an update, our clients wanted to maintain the existing finishes and colour scheme in both spaces. We worked with our client to preserve the hardwood floors in the kitchen, and the custom glass shower doors in the ensuite, with both features incorporated into our updated designs.
Spotlight Features
To help our clients modernize the spaces while preserving their character and colour scheme, we added several unique design elements, including:
- Designing the kitchen to fit within the existing “footprint” to preserve the hardwood floors.
- Using high-grade translucent granite countertops in both rooms, allowing light to pass through, showcasing the unique characteristics of the stone.
- A unique bathtub in the ensuite, feature heated air jets and heated back rests.
- Ensuite shower featuring custom glass and body sprays.
- Ensuite cabinetry making use of accessory pull-outs.
- Transforming the original custom shower doors into backlit artwork.
Unique Challenges
Every renovation is different, and each presents a unique set of challenges to both clients and contractors.
In the kitchen, the main priority was incorporating the existing hardwood flooring into the new design (not to mention preserving its finish throughout the renovation). Additional caution and preparation allowed us to keep the floors intact and incorporate them into the space’s modernized design.
The ensuite had a preexisting in-floor radiant heating system, which complicated our ability to relocate plumbing. Nonetheless, our designers and skilled trade partners worked together to come up with elegant solutions, ultimately finishing the floors with large format tiles for a clean, modern look.
